What was the role of Tenochitlan for the Aztecs?

Tenochtitlan was the centre of the Aztec Empire, and thus was its governmental, economic, religious and societal centre. The Emperor ruled from his palace there, and the city marketplaces were among the largest in Mesoamerica. The city also had two twin temples to the sun and moon, where most of the human sacrifices took place.
